Self-Portrait as Bunnies (The Bathers)

In 2008 I was fortunate enough to be awarded a commission for a piece of public sculpture from the Arts Council of New Orleans and the Joan Mitchell Foundation. City Watch (image included) was installed on top of the Falstaff building in New Orleans. However, the sculpture that was ultimately built for this award was different from the initial proposal that had secured the commission – the original plan was for a water borne installation. For this proposal I’m suggesting a floating sculpture consisting of two figures that would be facing each other and separated by about three feet. Only their shoulders, heads and ears would be visible above the waterline. Depending on the movement of the water and wind, they should seem slightly animated. The surface of these pieces is acrylic fur. When first installed they would be sparkly white. With exposure to the elements they would rather quickly weather to a dingy gray.
