Many know LEGO® as a children's toy. I use these pieces, by the thousands, to create mosaic artwork. I am fascinated that it is possible to create artwork presenting a rich illusion of texture, depth and dimensionality, using only geometric LEGO pieces. It is interesting how brains can be fooled into seeing smooth curves and gradients even though the artwork contains only rectangular bricks. By day, I am a Biology Professor at Eastern Michigan University. While teaching Biology and designing and conducting experiments certainly requires imagination, building mosaics provides another opportunity for me to express my creativity. I love sharing my artwork and connecting with people, young and old, as they interact with and experience mosaics that I have created. I hope you will visit my ArtPrize entry "Revolutionary," a LEGO mosaic depicting Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., addressing an audience at the Los Angeles Freedom Rally in 1963. I encourage you to see for yourself how the appearance of this artwork changes when viewed from different vantages, and to consider how our perspectives may affect what we see. I am privileged to participate in ArtPrize 2021 and I look forward to meeting you at the Courtyard Marriott in Downtown Grand Rapids, where "Revolutionary" will be displayed.
