'Bugspot' is an interactive mural located underneath Bridge St on the west bank of the river. It is best viewed from the paved trail along the water that runs through Ah-Nab-Awen park. The nearby river, plants, and the lights on the wall attract insects to the area. Viewers are invited to look closely at the wall for living critters, and then try to match it to an illustrated insect(or arachnid). These illustrations are grouped by taxonomic order. Seeing bugs grouped in this way makes their shared characteristics evident. In this way 'Bugspot' is an educational tool to introduce viewers to the basics of entomology. I hope it can call attention to local species that might otherwise go overlooked. Viewers are encouraged to add their observations to iNaturalist. This project was made possibly be DGRI's Activate this Place grant program, with advising from Parks and Recreation, the Grand Rapids Public Museum, and local researchers such at Matthew Bain.
