Growing Pains

Darcel Deneau's avatar Darcel Deneau

Last year this piece was chosen as the 'Best of Show' at the Anton Art Center, of Mount Clemens, 2020 Michigan Fine Art Competition, juried by DIA Director, Salvador Salort-Pons. I titled it 'Growing Pains' because that summer the city was filled with construction barriers due to all of the exciting growth. A piece of this scale, 4' x 4', represents 400-500 hours of studio time. This piece has been made with a great deal of passion and patience. I feel great joy at the completion of each piece but it is not without some amount of sacrifice. It is not unusual for me to have multiple cuts on my fingers and hands at the end of each day. A couple years ago I had a tiny piece of glass surgically removed from my thumb and stitches in my hand last summer. Over time I have found ways to get less cuts, but I have no intention of finding a new medium, for working in glass is what I love.
