The Heartside Park Basketball Court Project

Edgar Hernandez's avatar Edgar Hernandez

A true labor of love. A complete restoration of the basketball court at Heartside Park by Edgar Hernandez took place this summer before the installation you see today. Nature was beginning to reclaim the court with weeds and grass growing in the 300+ ft of cracks, spanning from end to end. Some more than 4" deep and over 2" wide. After filling in the cracks, the surface was then sanded down and smoothed over by hand in preparation for the anti-skid textured paint. Goal posts were then leveled by excavating 4' ft around the base and pouring 200 lbs. of concrete. Existing backboards and rims were taken down in order for the new sculpture goals to be installed. Edgar designed and fabricated the new fan-shaped backboards out of a single sheet of UV translucent yellow acrylic. New rims were then sandblasted of the standard orange coating and coated in metallic gold. The nets were constructed from unwelded decorative brass chain and posts were wrapped in mainstream ivy.
