Where have all the cowboys gone...

Cate Strumbos's avatar Cate Strumbos

Life on the range and life on the road are iconic symbols of freedom for Americans. There is an almost mythic allure to the lifestyles associated with each. In the 1880's, while most photographers focused on nature and indigenous peoples, L.A. Huffman (believed to be the photographer) chose the cattle drive as his subject matter. He recognized that the cowboy lifestyle was contracting if not disappearing as barbed wire changed life on the open range. Will autonomous vehicles similarly affect the truck drivers and forever change that lifestyle? Huffman's photo is reminiscent and poses this question in our rapidly changing technological world.
