My Gaia

Bonnie Zimmer's avatar Bonnie Zimmer

In creating "My Gaia" I have again partnered with nature, respectfully appropriating materials that have surrounded me my entire life - corn stalks for her skirt, corn husks for her coiled basketry bodice using the husks of sweet corn eaten by my husband and I, corn tassels to create her hair in front and the top of her skirt; and cork screw willow branches from a tree in my yard to form her arms and her wild hair in the back. Her headpiece, necklace, epaulettes, and bracelets are salvaged objects given new life. The face of my niece who was with child, and my hands were cast in plaster gauze and "gilded" to further elevate Her persona. The surrounding installation presents carefully selected and placed objects from my treasured collection of rocks and materials, gathered over time, that I use and reuse in my floor installations that often surround my fiber-based sculptures and totems. Overall, "My Gaia" celebrates Mother Nature, her gifts, and her magic...
