Aging Out / 18 years old

John Paul Goncalves's avatar John Paul Goncalves

This art project consists of 7 portraits. Each featuring a different teenager who aged out of the foster care system. The portraits are made with little paper squares. Using shadow and light the portrait will only be visible when the light is on. Each portrait is made with 3000 squares, and a percentage of the squares are watercolored, like a graph/chart. Each portrait correlates to 1 of 7 different statistics related to teens who age out. The statistic will be revealed when the light is off. During the exhibition, the portraits will be presented with the lights on. Every 18 sec. the lights turn of will the only thing remaining will be the statistics. The total number of squares used are 21,000, representing the average number of kids that age out yearly in the USA. During the execution of this entry some of the same kids that are being represented on the portraits had also participate in the creation of this project, and hopefully attend the exhibition.
