The stones used in this piece I obtained on travels within Michigan. I carved the cougar from a Petoskey stone I found at Lake Michigan near Charlevoix. The cougar is perched on top of a banded iron formation (specular hematite banded with chert) that came from the former Republic mine in the Upper Peninsula. It was purchased on a trip to the U.P. The cougar populations in Michigan had been completely wiped out around 1900. However, in recent years, cougars have been making a come back with sightings around Michigan . This piece projects my own love of travel onto the cougar's natural instinct of roaming long distances.
