Kirtland's Warbler

Amanda Dine's avatar Amanda Dine

For this piece, the Kirtland's Warbler, I wanted to bring attention to one of Michigan's endangered songbirds, the Kirtland’s Warbler. The species had become endangered due to the destruction of its natural habitat of young jack pine forests. The Kirtland's Warbler is particularly choosy about its habitat: it nests only in stands of young jack pines from 5-25 feet tall. Over the last few decades conservation efforts have allowed the species to make strides and increase their population, but is still in need of protection.
