Windows of Opportunity

Karen Dixon's avatar Karen Dixon

Windows of Opportunity represents the significant role that windows have played in allowing humans social interaction throughout the pandemic. Transparent barriers all around us - stores, restaurants, schools, nursing homes, hospitals, computer screens - have protected and connected us. In each of the windows, people are looking out and at each other, much like the people of Italy that came to their windows to greet their neighbors or the images we all saw throughout the pandemic of family and friends uniting once again through glass windows as well as computer windows. The pandemic has been a global experience, but each of us has experienced it in our own way. On a personal note, the pandemic has been my “window of opportunity” to return to my art and the joy I feel while bringing my subjects to life. As life slowed down, I was able to explore and experiment with new techniques and themes. Art Prize feels like my “window of opportunity” to communicate with my hometown of Grand Rapids as well as a wide audience through my art.
