California Sea Lions of the Coronado Islands

Celia Kujala's avatar Celia Kujala

Pups are born at the start of the summer at the Coronado Islands California sea lion rookery. By fall they are ready to explore their underwater world. During the fall of 2020, I spent many hours underwater observing their development. Play is a huge part of it and is also really beautiful to watch how they live in the moment. Sadly, life is not always easy. I met “The Scrawny Pup” who had most likely lost her mother but it was comforting to see she had a friend that stayed with her. Ocean currents bring garbage to their uninhabited island. I watched the pups in “Plastic Playtime” and “The Dangerous Toy” play with plastic and it was always my first concern to collect the trash when it was safe to do so. “Hooked Pup” stayed with me for the entire dive and seemed to want help. Unfortunately, surgery is often needed to remove hooks. This series is part of my project Seal Peace which shares each pinniped species’ story to promote conservation.
