Korean Marriage Boxes with Lotus Flower and Vine Motif

Dahee Hur's avatar Dahee Hur

In traditional Korean marriages, mothers of the bride and groom place gifts to the couple in a marriage box. The gifts are items which the couple will use their entire life. The lotus and vine represent fertility and long life. This marriage box is made from Korean Hanji paper. Hanji refers to both the paper that is made from the mulberry tree and the product made from this paper. For centuries, Koreans used Hanji to make just about anything imaginable. As one might guess, the paper was used to make such things as writing paper, books, fans, and even kites. However, due to its incredible strength and durability, Koreans used Hanji to make such everyday items as bowls, plates, tables, storage boxes, wardrobes, and even the clothes that went into the wardrobes! In addition to items made for use in the home, Koreans used Hanji as part of the home as well. In traditional Korean homes, the floor, walls, doors, and windows were covered with Hanji.
