We Can’t Wait

One of the most profound and life changing experience in my life was when my then 2 year son was severely injured in an automobile accident. I was introduced for the first time in my life to what it is to live with a disability. My son being paralyzed in the accident, the use of his wheelchair has sometimes placed a barrier to him interacting with non chair users, as they are uncertain how to act. I have chosen to try and remove this unspoken uneasiness; by reducing the wheelchairs to bare frames, redesigning and creating a figure sitting in the chair using items that reflect the users personality and portray their humanity. Taking over a hundred hours to hand paint the chairs in this exhibit, family members and even a few models themselves helped paint. The inclusion of family in the process was part of the design and symbolic of their love that never wavered in the face of a devastating injury and was an important part of the models healing process and continuing quality of life
