Kinetic Kaleidoscope! is a collaborative effort on behalf of my 6th-12th grade students as well as the wood workers from the Pentwater Artisan Center. Wood workers from the Pentwater Artisan Center cut out all the pieces of wood that comprise all 50+ hanging butterfly mobiles. Individual students hand painted and assembled each sculpture with acrylic paint, fish line and metal washers for weighted balance. Each butterfly sculpture flaps its wings when a breeze blows by or when the weighted drop is gently pulled. Students were encouraged to pull inspiration for their wing designs from multiple sources. Sources include but are not limited to; Judy Chicago's Dinner Party, the butterfly ecology of Michigan, Costa Rica and Mexico, and "Big Idea" personal themes. Older students selected personal themes that included Balance / Symmetry / Equality, Transformation, Becoming an Adult, Emerging from the Pandemic, Taking a Journey, Strength / Fragility, Life / Death, and Individuality.

About Pentwater Public School
Our team consists of over fifty 6th-12th grade student artists from Pentwater Public School, under the direction of visual arts teacher, Mrs, Carrie Jeruzal. The technical term for a group of butterflies is, "a kaleidoscope of butterflies." Our team is like our kaleidoscope of student artists.
