We Are All Apes

Carrie Cook's avatar Carrie Cook

We’ve lost our connection to other species, endangering and exploiting sentient individuals in the process. Other animals have the right to life and freedom from harm, which may be best expressed by portraying species closest to our own - non-human great apes. After all, we are all apes. Each one of the seven oil-painted portraits (40"H x 20"W) represents an inhabitant of the Center for Great Apes sanctuary - BamBam, Sandra, Kiki, Pebbles, Keagan, Sunshine and Louie. I toured the sanctuary in the fall of 2019, and was able to photograph and collect stories of the apes who reside there. Every one has a story. Whether taken as an infant for training and use in the entertainment industry, or living caged for years in a homeowner's garage, their stories are inextricably linked with our own, and like ours, are filled with both loss and hope.
