Today's Life (Save Myanmar)

Zay Zay Htut's avatar Zay Zay Htut

On February 1, the military carried out a coup against the National League for Democracy (NLD) on the first day of our newly-elected Parliament, claiming voter fraud after the NLD won a landslide victory against the military-led party. In the midst of COVID 19, the military stole our hopes for democratically-elected government. The people of Myanmar want democracy. People everywhere took to the streets to peacefully protest, united in a symbolic three finger salute. Terribly, the military opened fire on peaceful protesters, shooting and killing unarmed people with live bullets. Since the coup, about 1,000 students have been detained by the military and around 10,000 people have been arrested. The people of Myanmar need international humanitarian aid and help confronting the military, which now rules exclusively by force. This painting reflects my feeling of living suffocated in a small dark room, hoping for the light of democracy.
