"Faces: part II"

Maya James's avatar Maya James

The past four years have been an intense battle. Facing racism, sexism and constant opposition to who I am as a mixed race individual has created massive struggles with my mental health, physical health and self esteem. The only thing I can turn to for comfort and lack of judgement is my art. I have found a voice for my family as the first generation out of Jim Crow and the first generation of biracial individuals in my family who have not been enslaved. With the commercialization of black tragedy for capitalist corporate colonial gain, it seems no one is interested in celebrating the lives of black or indigenous or people of color unless it is garnished with the horror of an unjust fate. My mural on a shipping container in Calder Plaza will be to be an exhibit that instills confidence and self esteem in young people of color and indigenous femme people, with a legend of positive accolades.
