Art Under Siege

Team Gaza

From Team Gaza - Malak Mattar, Basel Maqousi, Laila Kassab, Maysa Yousef, Rami Eisa, Maurice Jacobsen, Jamie Jackson. With a massive shortage of electricity, lack of art supplies, inability to travel beyond concrete barriers, to say nothing of four major conflagrations that have engulfed the region, the artwork created inside Gaza is really quite remarkable esthetically and technically. For ArtPrize 2021 the vision is to bring this work to Grand Rapids to be displayed in a multimedia installation merging original artwork and video projections, along with large format displays of the street art found inside Gaza. This work has not been seen in the U.S. and truly represents the depth of emotion felt by the women, men and children living under the military, economic and cultural siege. The work documents a fleeting moment in history and speaks as eloquently as any news report or political analysis. Please visit: www.artundersiege.com

About Team Gaza

The conditions faced in Gaza and the West Bank are a reflection not only of this particular conflict, but of wars unfolding throughout the world and throughout history. The bonds of fear, anxiety, loss, sadness and horror, mixed with flashes of optimism and beauty, inexorably tie the past to the present. They tie all peoples together.
