Leelanau Rocks

Robert Bayer's avatar Robert Bayer

I bought my retirement home in Northport, Mi (Leelanau county) back in 2010 and moved up here full time in 2016. These are some of the treasures that I found on the Leelanau Peninsula in the last 11 years. I couldn't stop with just collecting the rocks so I bought some lapidary equipment (6 diamond grinding wheels) and started polishing the stones. Add in my hobby of photography and I knew I had to capture these unique pieces of history and share them. I started photographing these in 2010 (just petoskey stones and sea glass), but over the years I've added Charlevoix stones, Horn coral, Chain coral, Cladopora, Leeland Blues, Crinoids, and Honeycomb coral. Some of the stones (fossils) are up to 420 Million years old, others are less than 150 years old. The current image takes me back to my childhood rock hunting walks on the beach, so I thought I'd share it and maybe bring a smile to someone else.
