Abstract Fiction

Aidan Donahue's avatar Aidan Donahue

Abstract Fiction means that we understand reality through subjective stories — we create our own understanding of the world. But that doesn’t mean we are isolated from the truth, it just means that we need to be intentional about what we focus on. For Aidan, this means creating art every day, a routine that grounds him in the present: the joy and the despair, the melancholy and the hope. Just as Aidan uses the physical act of art making to stay present, this exhibit prompts the audience to concentrate on their sensory experience, as this ties us to the present moment — and in the present, you can access what is timeless: the spiritual. This experience is personal, visceral, and subjective, the same way that our senses and our stories are our own. So while you look, concentrate on what you see externally and what you feel internally, then ask yourself: what is the story I tell myself about my spiritual experience?
