In 2019, a series of protests arose in Chile against the country´s economic and political model. Within this context, numerous protesters suffered eye injuries due to the use of force and rubber bullets by state agents. According to The United Nations, there are more than 400 people with eye trauma caused by metal and rubber pellets that were fired with riot control shotguns by the Chilean Police Force. In the background of the painting, the slogan of the Chilean national coat of arms reads “Por la razón o la fuerza” (By reason or force), being an obviously aggressive stance, since it imposes two simultaneous manifestations of intolerance: a belief in righteousness, and if this is not accepted, claiming the right to impose it by force, which in this case was through the use of rubber-ish bullets and simultaneous eye and vision loss. (A study in Nature showed that the “rubber” bullets used during the protests contained only 20% rubber, and 80% hard metals, including lead).
