We Stand On The Shoulders Of Giants

Julie Torres's avatar Julie Torres

I created "We Stand On The Shoulders Of Giants" in memory of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and in honor of her life's work. Using the technique of screenprinting, I print by hand every color, pattern and word, cutting the paper into strips and weaving them back together. The text is the complete oral argument that Ginsburg delivered to the Supreme Court in the 1973 case "Frontiero v. Richardson," a landmark case for gender equality. At 7' x 5', "We Stand On The Shoulders Of Giants" is my largest woven screenprint, but it is not the first piece I have made about the late justice; I began this body of work in 2019. Having practiced law prior to beginning my career as an artist, "RBG" has long been a role model and inspiration to me. Though slight in stature, she was a giant in every sense of the word. It is my hope that this piece will remind us of the potential for greatness, kindness, courage and grace that we all possess so that we may carry her legacy forward.
