Legendary Anna (from Mooring + Undercurrents series)

Cathy Feeman's avatar Cathy Feeman

"Communities are place-holders for stories, narratives, and myths." A relationship exists between our histories and narratives (or perceptions) and our personal and cultural identities. An ongoing theme of my work is mooring, the sense of fitting securely into a specific culture and history —a time, a place, a people, represented here by the reference to topography. Legendary Anna is part of an ongoing series that retells stories of women that immigrated to the often-forgotten steel community of Southeast Chicago beginning in the mid-1800s. Anna is one of the many thousands of women who boarded ships alone as young as age 14 or entered our southern border by foot, bus, or car, leaving family (and often family records) far behind. They created moorings for future generations: raised and lost family members to sickness, disease, or industrial accidents, fought poverty, ran businesses, supported neighbors, built places of worship, and welcomed other immigrants as they found their home.
