Son of Man

I spent the pandemic creating a giant 9 x 7 foot painting entitled "Son of Man," which alludes not only to the controversial biblical expression but also the famous 1964 work by Belgian surrealist Rene Magritte. I began the canvas in January 2020 and did not complete it until March of this year when it was used as the centerpiece for my master's thesis exhibit at the Kendall College of Art and Design in downtown Grand Rapids. The name of my show was "Fancy Monkeys: The Animal That Became a God," and it featured a series of works from the last year that lie at the crossroads of human evolution and popular culture. "Son of Man" interrogates the past, present, and future of the human species through various symbolic and art historical references riddled throughout the composition. The painting is a reminder of what human beings really are, what we're doing, and where we are going. Art Prize is a fantastic opportunity and would be the perfect event at which I can show this work publicly.
