The Mercy Man

Matthew Danko's avatar Matthew Danko

My nearly 7' tall wood sculpture of "Woody" the Mercy Man is made of treated lumber split into fingersize pieces and reglued together with construction adhesive. As Woody cries out for forgiveness from God and society, he is depicted in two stages, emerging and breaking free from the shackles of his failures. We are reminded that mercy and forgiveness should be given to everyone in this day and age. That is the message I hope to convey. Along with the pencil drawing of world War II G.I's showing mercy to a prisoner of war, mercy needs to be extended to everyone. A little more gentleness and more compassion are key ingredients to a vibrant and healthy society. Woody needs forgiveness...and so do I. Matthew Danko 2021
