Covid Purse Diary

Heather Boersma's avatar Heather Boersma

My Covid Purse Diary is a series made with found materials illustrating common experiences shared in the pandemic. Rather than shopping for a new spring purse during the quarantine, I started taking longer walks, slower bike rides, and collecting natural specimens and discarded artifacts that spoke to me about the shifting values of the world due to the quarantine. Baking bread, walking on trails, trying to cut our own hair, hoarding toilet paper, and wearing masks became global trends that fascinated me. Some of my purses have a sense of whimsy like the toilet paper roll purse, others document serious divisions between blacks and whites, Republicans and Democrats. I have begun writing poems interpreting the purses such as my catalpa pod purse ”I’m curved like a parenthesis or an off-ramp, but shake me like a piggy bank after this quarantine and I will grow into your victory garden.” My purses are created to symbolize style, value, and the things that have carried us through.
