Inspired by the Buddhist concepts of Bhāvacakra (the cycle of embodied suffering), and Śūnyatā (the emptiness of existence), Mandalas for 2021 combines the visual language of the mandala with the addictive appeal of the screen. Using the logic of boxes, layering, windows, and digital effects, concentric rectangles imply nested existences and an interconnected universe. An eye becomes an egg, stars become quantum fields, and a Bodhi tree becomes a pair of wings. Outer space becomes inner space. Life in the Information Age presents humans with a crescendo of frightening information, with our future frequently appearing as a precipice verging on oblivion. As the collective experiences increasing existential dread, digital corporate culture increasingly rewards us for pursuing distraction. Mandalas for 2021 suggests an alternative to future-fear, a re-staging of the present wherein the ouroboros of capitalism and cultural domination are dissolved by a humble call to presence.
