Super Bloom (Desert Isolation)

Emily Lindenbaum's avatar Emily Lindenbaum

A Super Bloom is a rare desert botanical phenomenon in which wildflowers blossom at roughly the same time. The phenomenon is associated with an unusually wet rainy season. Given all of the extreme flooding/drought/disasters/disease, I felt that the conditions we are experiencing in our world today, are similar to the resiliency of desert life and vegetation to not only survive, but flourish in a rare and extraordinary occurrence. From the massive flooding that occurred earlier this summer, our basement flooded and along with it, my art studio. I decided to save some of the artwork that was damaged and repurpose it to help me find my creative voice; I decided to use it as my mixed media. Super Bloom represents the epitome of discovering self; Emerging from darkness and devastation, breaking through the cracks of despair to Super Bloom individually, and collectively with others, who found their creativity and purpose, from extraordinary dire circumstances.
