Pieces of Brotherhood

Pieces of Brotherhood was envisioned after a friend captured a photograph of my two sons in their embrace. Each of my sons has a distinct personality, qualities, and way of relating, but together they share a unique camaraderie. As their mother, I have long-desired to encapsulate their simple, yet intricate love for one another through a hand-torn, paper collage. I began by hand-tearing watercolor paper into hundreds of pieces. Then, using only black acrylic paint diluted with water, I brushed the torn paper to create a range of white, grays and black. Then I assembled these pieces together, selectively choosing the shades needed for each highlight, shadow, section of hair, fingers and so on, gluing them onto a background paper, making effort to carefully replicate the original photo (with a bit of artistic leeway). Capturing and reflecting on moments of time shared between those we love creates an appreciation and realization of the gifts they are to us.
