The Sound of Silence

Maureen Carmody's avatar Maureen Carmody

The Sound of Silence is a painted wood assemblage that is intended to illustrate the idea that our words can illuminate the best in ourselves and others, or our words can destroy the best in ourselves and others. We all have elements of dark and light within ourselves, and how we choose to relate to others will ultimately tip the balance of society toward enlightenment or toward anarchy. The words we use are the words our children will use and become. Silence is also powerful and can allow darkness to proliferate if we choose not to make our voice heard, but silence can also help us to hear and understand others better. Sometimes we can be so eager to speak that we don't allow an opportunity to hear and understand other points of view. In order to become better humans, each of us must strive to evince the better part of our natures, resist allowing others to quench that light, and resist our own inclinations to quench that light in in others.
