The Glass Garden

Kelly Tuttle's avatar Kelly Tuttle

"The Glass Garden" blooms with 234 hand-cut and heat formed flowers intricately wired with 318 etched leaves. Flying above are 98 hand-cut, etched, and dimensionally painted Monarch butterflies. The garden was constructed using approximately 500 recycled plastic water bottles and containers. Every Fall, millions of fourth-generation Monarch butterflies take their amazing journey of over 2,000 miles to Mexico to live out their winter. I am inspired by their flight and their resilience. The Monarch's rely on the wildflowers and the wildflowers rely on them. Using recycled plastic to construct the wildflower sculptures, the material comes with it's own story of where it has been, not perfect, since it was used and then discarded, but it is unique and worthy. As it is heated and formed, it transforms into something even more beautiful and there is a renewed sense of hope and purpose. "For I know the plans I have for you, " declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." -Jeremiah 29:11
