The River

Benjamin Boss's avatar Benjamin Boss

This piece is painted in an abstract expressionist style that evokes the energy and spirit of the Grand River. Though not exactly pictorial the piece allows the viewer to reflect much as one does while standing at the river’s shore. As a resident of Grand Rapids the river has always provided me a place of solace and a point of reference. Rivers and waterways have been essential to human dwelling and gathering, and as such there is history and stories told in rivers. The piece is about nature, beauty, time, being, and life. My painting style is intuitive and gestural. I use colors and line to evoke an emotional response from the viewer. I also use color fields to allow the viewer to settle into the work while the energy of line and marks of the brush push the viewer throughout the work. My work is influenced by Monet, J.M.W. Turner, Frankenthaler, and most importantly Joan Mitchell.
