History repeating

Stefaan Vermeulen's avatar Stefaan Vermeulen

In the West we experience the longest time of peace ever, so different from 75 years ago, when the greatest war ever, reshaped our countries into one great ruin. Striking about the 2nd World War was the fact that, for the first time, there were as many civilian casualties as there were military casualties. Even today, names are still being added to the list of Belgian civilian victims, so long after the date. In today's conflicts an estimated 85 % of the dead are civilians. One of the most horrible conflicts taking place today is the war in Yemen, with a huge number of children dying from hunger or bombing. They are even deliberate targets in this ‘modern’ war. This image of a dying child in Yemen is compiled from the official list of Belgian war victims from the 2nd World War. History repeating: from a distance it's an image of a dying child that shoots by on the internet, only when you get closer you can read all the individual names of real people of flesh and blood...
