The Stormy Kromer

Catherine McClung's avatar Catherine McClung

The community of man is a whole lot of common folk connected & overlapping, young & old souls that give life to a community. I have been working on a series of watercolor portraits of real people. This gentleman with all his personality & soul caught my attention. He is wearing the legendary Stormy Kromer hat, favored by sportsmen & women. It is a Midwestern original, manufactured in the far west end of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This hat that embodies the independence & grit of the Upper Midwest was named for George "Stormy" Kromer, a semipro baseball player who later became a railroad engineer. In 1903, after losing many a cap to the wind, asked his wife to make a warm hat that would remain secure on his head. She modified a baseball cap design with earflaps & it proved to be a success. Soon Stormy's coworkers were lining up to have their own hats made. So the headgear we choose represents what we all have in common, a need for protection, style or something unique to our culture.
