Different, not Less

Nina Robinson's avatar Nina Robinson

I am a textile artist that uses her sewing machine as a conduit for change. Change in perception, change in acceptance and change in how society thinks about stitching as an art form. Sewing is how I express myself as an artist. I create installations transforming discarded clothing into sculptural forms. Several years ago my adult son was diagnosed with Autism. As with many individuals on the spectrum he has sensory issues and repetitive self soothing behaviors. I began to focus on repetition as a theme in my textile pieces. I deconstruct discarded garments, mostly button down shirts, then reassemble them to create figurative forms. After reassembly, I use repetitive stitching to manipulate the fabric which creates texture and depth. The site specific installations are meant to be interactive and sensory friendly. The bright colors and movement draw the viewer in and my intent is to open a dialogue about awareness and acceptance of neurodiversity.
