I've been privy to transformation. After battling cancer, these women have taken back control by choosing a symbol of life (botanical imagery) to alter, conceal, and even adorn their physical scarring. After a mastectomy, the body is completely changed. This work establishes a new point of reference, a marker that’s intimately theirs that replaces their sense of rupture and damage with an act of creation. This process of listening, meeting with empathy, and working together, has helped almost 300 women heal from trauma on their own terms. For seven years I've researched, created, and documented this process of self reclamation. This is the exhibit of work JAMA calls the “intersection of art and science.”
