Grand Rapids Cityscape

Sjaak Kaashoek's avatar Sjaak Kaashoek

In May 2019 I made a sketch from the eighth floor of Secchia Center in Grand Rapids. What paid my attention was the beautiful light, the urban planning, and the endless roads. As a stranger from Europe, I like the architecture and the way the city is planned. Not like the cities in Europe, there is no specific central point like a church or square. In this painting, I tried to combine some different characteristics of this part of the city which paid my attention. The community-related buildings as churches, medical research, and governance institutions represent to me a well-organized world, but on the other hand, I had the feeling of a fragmented city as well. In this painting, I tried to unite both feelings in a harmonic way.
