The Gatsby Project

West Egg

The Gatsby Project is an allusion to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby,” an American classic in which Fitzgerald explores one man’s attempt to recreate himself in order to climb the social ladder and actualize his “American Dream.” Born to poor farmers, James Gatz renames himself “Jay Gatsby.” While often thought of as a romance, the novel is, rather, a critique of a capitalist system, one in which social mobility is all but impossible. The Gatsby Project answers these essential questions: Who created your avatar? To what extent are we able to construct our identity? What is the relationship between the way we present and our ability to succeed in this country?
