Temps lie´ (connected movement)

John Sobczak's avatar John Sobczak

For this series of images, I worked with the very talented dancers of The Grand Rapids Ballet Company as well as James Sofranko, artistic director. The dancers were asked to pose from a seated or laying position on the floor to create unique shapes as seen from above. Images where then selected because of their intriguing silhouette and natural grace. The images are repeated and placed in a design which highlight shape and with the help of negative space create movement in a still image. Colors are enhanced and the individuals retouched, often extensively. Shadows are often used to create depth in the image and other times eliminated to simplify the design. The series as a whole is a unique take on dance photography where the dancers become lost in the pattern and the choreography is formed from the contours the pattern takes. When viewed from afar the image is just shapes but up close the performers in all their beautiful perfection appear. For their help my thanks to go out to these special artists, Nigel Tau, Yuka Oba-Muschiana, Julia Turner, Emily Reed and Adriana Wagenveld.
