A window reborn

Michele Shornak's avatar Michele Shornak

This window was donated to me from a company disassembling old and abandoned structures and homes in Detroit. As an item that sits in landfills I work on as many old windows as possible to give them a new purpose as an art piece with character and history. As a Michigan artist I have made many smaller Michigan's but felt this window was destined to be my greatest stretch of my imagination and skills. Every piece of glass is hand cut by myself and I freehanded the entire piece without a pattern or knowing where my hands would lead me. Thus far it has taken me hundreds of hours spread out over a year and a half time period. With the Pandemic crushing down on my art business, I devoted myself to this piece and it has given me purpose and direction. So now this reclaimed Detroit window is born again and is a huge mosaic that simply shines in the light and leads your eyes on a mesmerizing journey. It will have some background work still to be completed with glazes in the negative space.
