Recognizing My White Privilege and Suffering of BIPOC (Black & Indigenous People of Color)

Debbie Hoskins's avatar Debbie Hoskins

This series comes out of self education and soul searching about how I and other white people think about BIPOC and the white privilege we were born into and enjoy. As I create on stolen Native land, my white ancestors have perpetuated over 700 years of cruel, abhorrent, murderous, and horrifying behavior. We need to listen to BIPOC and absorb any uncomfortableness that may occur. In the drawing, "Fire: Change & Hope," I express that the great injustices done to BIPOC need to be rectified at a quicker pace than in the past. While drawing, I meditated, processed, and listened to books about the BIPOC struggle and how to remedy it. I use symbols to express what comes from my soul, spirit, and heart and aspire to reach yours. The four elements of nature, earth, water, air, and fire, are present and are a unification of the male and the feminine. In the large piece, "Air: Wind of the Spirit," musical notes are used to represent the chakras, energy centers, in the body, that include the concepts of love awareness, basic trust, wisdom, and spiritual understanding. Labyrinths, a meditative tool, are a basis of my artwork and appear in each piece. I atone for racism and my white privilege by being willing to give it up and make a lifelong commitment to studying, reflecting, being aware, and using my talents and interests to right this insidious unfairness and obtain equality for all.
