The Pandemic Portraits

Nicholas Hill's avatar Nicholas Hill

Since March 2020 I have created over 3,500 portraits, drawing on pages from the NYT and the WSJ. Each page from the daily papers has a pandemic related headline. The subjects of the drawings are also from the same newspapers, passers-by, the unintentional subjects in the background of the news photos. Like the victims of the pandemic, these "found" subjects have families and friends. Were they to die, they would be mourned. As the pandemic took hold in the US, early on, one American was dying every 5 minutes, I have used this statistic to guide my process, investing a maximum of 5 minutes per drawing. The purpose of the project is to give human faces to the mind-numbing number of deaths we have suffered as a country. If selected for the Art Prize project, I would aim to select a large number of portraits, appropriate for the venue. To date I have exhibited a group of 100 portraits in a single installation.
