Finding Peace

Michelle Middleton's avatar Michelle Middleton

I was so moved and felt so helpless watching the devastation unfold from the forest fires burning out of control everyday in Australia that I decided to create a sculpture to give ones soul a sense of peace. The loss of life from the uncontrollable forest fires left such devastation and sadness in people’s hearts all over the world. This sculpture warms your heart and gives you a sense that the loss of life is resting in peace. I created this sculpture using a technique called needle felting. ( A super tiny needle with barbs on it, is jabbed into wool fiber. Each wool fiber also has barbs on it. The needle binds the fibers together and it begins to felt together.) Bronze like hands are holding the Australia shaped woolen land, with a wool koala bear and a wool baby kangaroo hugging each other amidst the ravaged and burned up back country in Australia, all on a wool cloud, perched up on a metal stand.
