The Peace Clock

Hello. I’m Tim Donohoe, and this is my Peace Clock. The first lock down was a very stressful time for all of us. Not just the self isolation. That was challenging but necessary. But I saw a nation being torn apart and manipulated by Hatred, Anger and Fear. Our screens were filled with ugliness of every sort. I knew I had to do something. I would use my greatest weapon, Art. I would make a large piece and fill it with images of Peace, Love and Courage, the antidotes for Hatred, Anger and Fear. Symbols would be borrowed from cultures and nations the world over. I would share the progress of this piece on social media. I chose, for my platform, a clock found at a thrift store. It is a low-end Grandfather Clock sold by Montgomery Ward, probably in the late ‘60s. When I got it, the clock was in pretty rough shape. Some parts of it were missing, others broken. It no longer kept time. After repairs, new works, two coats of primer and two coats of white house paint, I was ready to begin. I had no specific blueprint, but I did have the overarching philosophy of Peace, Love and Courage. The Peace Clock was a total stream-of-consciousness creation. Each section was approached as a unique problem looking for a solution. Lots of detail was used to encourage the viewer to spend time with it, but stopped short of true horror vacuii. • 3D, functioning Grandfather Clock • Response to the events of 2021 • Positive socio/political message • Symbols of Peace and Love from around the world • Color and detail encourage viewer interaction • Accessible to people of all ages • Repurposed, recycled materials On a final note, the section with the night sky and compass is a riddle. Can you solve it?
