Africa's Big Five

Michael Feehan's avatar Michael Feehan

I have been privileged to witness and photograph these animals in the wild and have become aware of their plight of being threatened or endangered. Big game hunting and pouching has severely effected the natural selection process in the practice of removing the fittest and stronger of the species, thus diluting the gene pool. Urban expansion has effected not only ancient routes of migration but has added to the culling of herds and loss of grazing and hunting lands. These are simply magnificent and unique creatures which have thrived for melenia until Man has elected to covet more than his basic needs for hunting, i.e., food, warmth, survival. Instead, the creation of a market for the foolish and irresponsible desire for stuffed trophy heads, and alleged aphrodisiacs as well as unchecked population growth has reeked havoc on each of these species.
