In Remembrance

Upon continued reflection of the past 18 months and all that has occurred with the COVID-19 pandemic I felt compelled to speak into the moment in which we find ourselves. My humble intent with this work is to symbolically bear in mind our collective suffering, continued endurance, and staggering grief; to honor the tragic loss of so many precious lives. This work is a large drawing of a single white Chrysanthemum suspended over and merging into a velvety black background. For me there is deep meaning in the quiet simplicity of a mum, a flower with significance both in death and life. The medium I chose is charcoal. Bearing in mind that vine charcoal comes from twigs cut from the branch and burnt in a kiln without air while compressed charcoal, also burnt, is ground to a fine powder then joined with a binder. A process to crush, burn, press, and bind while also holding the potential to create and mirror back its origins hint at something meaningful, symbolic and disarming.
