TOUCH me too

Hali Eliza's avatar Hali Eliza

TOUCH me too is a lyrical meditation on vulnerability and violence behind a transparent wall. A woman seems, from a distance, to be in a bubble of peaceful domesticity, but discovers she is trapped in a situation not fully within her control, and her concept of stability and agency begin to change. The piece juxtaposes intimate partner violence, being without a home, and human trafficking. TOUCH follows the evolution of upheaval (domestic, social, political), asking us to face and address problems from which we might rather look away. The title is both an invitation to the viewer and a critique of the dichotomy of touch within the context of abuse. Perpetrators inflict unwanted, degrading, and damaging touch; can we reach beyond closed doors, through shrouds of silence—fear, real danger, concepts of privacy and evidence, taboos—to help free those caught and being hurt? We made amazing progress this year. Now #me too's sisters--domestic abuse and human trafficking--need more movement.
