Temporarily Permanent

Temporarily Permanent With this piece, I seek to embody the impact art and artists have on Grand Rapids. I photographed dancers with murals and landmarks of the city as they performed freestyle choreography, prompted by words and classical music. The photographs on the door strip away background distractions leaving the viewer to meditate on one artist, inviting them to enter and be inspired. The title of this work alludes to the impermanence at the core of human struggle. Ultimately walls fall, murals fade, sculptures rust and dancers age. Yet, art composed 300 years ago still moves today’s artists and they in turn will embolden another generation, forever continuing cultural inspiration. In my fleeting moment, it is my aim to have this work leave a lasting impression upon the viewer; inspire others to create art, share joy and to challenge the usual presentation of a photograph and portrait.
