Come Eat

The goal of the project is to expose an uncomfortable connection between racism, food and the consumption of media. Through traditional and social media, images of brutalized black bodies are circulated like currency. Although the dissemination of these images and videos may serve to raise awareness, there is also the possibility that everyone is well aware of the issue. The people in the videos become content to be consumed, like every other meme or two-minute article. Licorice babies, once called nigger babies, are just one example of a bizarre kind of “imagined cannibalism” in the history of racism. The candies look like pickaninnies, stereotypical representations of black children. The eating of the licorice babies become a metaphor for the violence and the consumption of brutalized black bodies
